Known for 15 years on the Nice art scene as part of a duo, Jean-Philippe Roubaud has recast his practice since 2015. He paints drawing or draws painting, using pencil, brush and systematically graphite.

It all begins with the interweaving of the process of painting and the fact of drawing. The artist forces himself to restrict the means of the process, and reduces the act to its smallest device to retain only the essential. The encounter takes place on the surface of the paper, and bears witness

the presence of water, the primary element in the sense of substance and form. The second element, graphite powder, defines the materialization of language. Paper, the classic support for drawing, becomes in turn plane and volume, trompe l'oeil or abstraction.

His painted drawings are quotations, whether from scientific works or simple memorial phenomena. Architecture, sculpture, photography and the trajectory of the body are all evoked through the use of this archaic technique.

The artist constantly questions the role of drawing and its foundation as a discipline in its own right in the history of art.
