Nino Kapanadze is a contemporary artist originally from Georgia, born in Tbilisi in 1990. She now lives and works in Paris and trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, in Stéphane Calais’s studio, as well as in Finland and Germany. She has notably exhibited her paintings as part of the École des Beaux-Arts’ CRUSH programme, designed to showcase the school’s artists’ work to art professionals, which helped bring her to the fore. The artist presented two paintings there; one more figurative and the other more abstract, yet complementary, reflecting her syncretic and hybrid artistic approach which blends different aesthetics, techniques, shades and colours. Since then, her career has been enriched by several solo exhibitions, notably at the Crèvecœur Gallery and the Pernod Ricard Foundation in Paris. She has also taken part in numerous group exhibitions at renowned venues on the international art scene, including the Perrotin and David Zwirner galleries in Paris, the Andrew Kreps Gallery in New York, and Super Dakota in Brussels. Her paintings, including April Fool (2022), amongst others, have been acquired for the Lafayette Anticipations Endowment Fund’s collection. The artist is presenting her very first exhibition in Brazil from 15 August, entitled Abstentions, at the Almeida & Dale Gallery in São Paulo.
Her works explore the notions of appearance and disappearance, transparency and memory, whilst weaving a subtle dialogue between abstraction and figuration. Through them, the artist expresses her poetic and dreamlike imagination, shaped by her literary and artistic influences, as well as by the years she spent in Georgia. The world of his paintings draws as much from the legacy of Soviet realist art as from the mountainous landscapes and monasteries of his childhood, which have shaped the foundations of his artistic language.
