Le rendez-vous des amis de Régis Debray
The exhibition
The exhibition ‘Le rendez-vous des amis de Régis Debray’ (A Gathering of Régis Debray's Friends) - Leonardo Cremonini, Gérard Fromanger, Roberto Matta and Ernest Pignon-Ernest, which will open on 25 September 2025 at Espace Art Absolument, celebrates the long-standing friendships that the philosopher and writer enjoyed with these leading figures in contemporary art.
Belonging to the Surrealist or Narrative Figuration movements, they share the same committed conception of art, thought of as an act of resistance. As such, they have nourished Régis Debray's reflection on the status of the image in our societies, developed since Vie et mort de l'image : Une histoire du regard en Occident (1992, Gallimard) to Stupéfiant image (2013, Gallimard). Through these intellectual partnerships, the exhibition navigates between art, literature and politics, inviting us to reflect on the role of the artist in the contemporary world, their power of action and evocation in the face of the uninterrupted flow of images. For this occasion, Ernest Pignon-Ernest has created a new limited edition, Varizione Tintoretto, inspired by Régis Debray's famous text on Tintoretto (1986, Eloges, Gallimard), who saw him as a genius of the moving image and a precursor of cinema.
