After graduating in printmaking and painting at the Ecole des Beaux-arts in Aix en Provence in 1985, she moved to London, to the Chelsea School of Art in the printmaking department. Her work is both representative of the current generation of contemporary Maghrebian art and of a "feminine art", understood as a new expression of the female condition in the Arab world. It can be understood as a critical questioning of orientalism and particularly of the fantasies projected on the oriental woman. "My double origin and my double French and Tunisian culture have always influenced my work as a visual artist. Both have given rise to gestures, repentances and decisions that have led my work towards a ’minoritarian becoming’". She paints on various medias (canvas, paper, glass, fabric) and enriches her colours with sand or iron filings. She is also a stage designer and director of plays such as "Ubu in Palestine" presented in Ramallah in 2002. Recently, Meriem Bouderbala has turned to photography, where she stages herself.
