Miquel Barceló was born in 1957 on the Spanish island of Majorca, where he lives, as well as in Paris and Mali (in the Dogon Country). At the beginning of his artistic career, he worked in drawing and painting, but then experimented with other mediums, such as sculpture and ceramics. Influenced by the work of Dubuffet and Tàpies, he quickly asserted himself as belonging to the neo-expressionist movement. The 1980s marked a stylistic change with a return to figurative painting; they coincided with his international recognition: the galleries Bruno Bishofberger, Leo Castelli and Yvon Lambert represented him. In 1991, a first retrospective of his work was presented at the Carré d'Art in Nîmes, and in 1992 the Spanish daily El País published a twenty-four page supplement on his African Travel Notes. His style is characterized by immense matierist formats and sculptures where organic structures and colored pigments are mixed. In 2007, he was entrusted with the decoration of a chapel in the cathedral of Palma de Mallorca. Numerous institutions, including the Centre Georges Pompidou, the MACBA in Barcelona, the Louvre Museum and the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid, have exhibited his work, establishing it as one of the most influential of the last twenty years.
