"Throughout his life, Hantaï had a genius for more or less spectacular releases that preserved the creator's freedom and allowed for the development of the most inventive modes of his work," recalls Marcelin Pleynet. In 1981 and 1982, the artist, at the height of his fame, produced three major exhibitions: at the CAPC in Bordeaux, at the French Pavilion of the Venice Biennale and Tabulas lilas at the Galerie Jean Fournier, where the artist proposed an unprecedented encounter between the white of the unpainted canvas and the painted white, with the appearance of a quasi-virtual and evanescent mauve. The colour is neither loaded, nor worked, nor weighed down, it is as if it were tinted. After this exhibition, he chose, in his own words, to "leave the stage without saying a word".
