The exhibition

Christian Jaccard. Lafoliemericourt.

It is within the decor dating from the XVIIth century of the Chapel of the Penitents of Chaudes-Aigues that the Franco-Swiss artist Christian Jaccard exhibits this summer two works which echo each other. Invited by the CLAC Art contemporain, the artist creates an in situ combustion intended to accompany the projection of a film made in collaboration with Arte in 2006, "Lafoliemericourt", which reveals the creative process he has developed: in a long corridor with white walls that takes on the appearance of an "incandescent theater", Christian Jaccard becomes a magician and uses fire as a pictorial tool. Conveyed by the artist on the white walls, the flames draw like landscapes in black and white with irregular reliefs and horizon. On either side of the nave of the Chapel, as a material testimony of this fiery experimentation highlighted by the video, stand two walls altered by the flames, results of the work in situ carried out by the artist. Omnipresent in the work of Christian Jaccard, the trace is here the result of a degradation that is poetic and paradoxically creative. The works exhibited are part of an artistic research work whose origin goes back to the 1970s and which the artist compares to the ecobuage, an ancestral agricultural practice intended to fertilize the earth by fire. Jaccard's artistic blazes are indeed fertile: from the soot that spreads more or less on the wall are born mountains or forests that can evoke the landscapes represented in some Japanese prints.
