The exhibition

Philippe Piguet: In relation to the fact that the pretext of your painting is based on the idea of place - successively on two houses that are familiar to you - what is the main thread in your approach?
Mathieu Cherkit: In fact, it is myself. My daily life. My paintings are like boxes full of thoughts that cross my mind, but always at the service of the painting. Hence these games of textures and colors which are motivated by the desire for a surface, a light, a reflection, a material effect.

P.P.: So your concern is to paint the here and now?
M.C.: Yes, but in different temporalities. As the title of my latest exhibition at Xippas Gallery suggests - Time's up. I don't paint in the moment. As I work on a painting, time passes, even days. The goal is to capture different moments and combine them. In fact, there is always a part of collage but it is more timeless.
