The exhibition

For the first time in France, the Maison Européenne de la Photographie (MEP) is devoting a major retrospective to the South African artist Zanele Muholi, born in 1972 in the midst of racial segregation, who is overturning preconceived ideas by conducting photographic work that is inseparable from her queer activism. Where are the black journalists?" the artist asked at the end of the press conference on the opening day of the exhibition. The tone is set. It is not a provocation but an observation. This question sums up quite well the work of Muholi who defines himself as a "visual activist" and who highlights simple facts. Much of his work makes Black LGBTQIA+ people visible. He shows that they are there, that they exist. (...) Particularly rich and humanistic, this retrospective brings together the breadth of Muholi's work, which, during the Covid-19 crisis, turned to painting.
