Matisse. Cahiers d’Art – Le tournant des années 1930
The exhibition
Before leaving for Tahiti in 1930, for his sixtieth birthday, Matisse trampled and confided to his daughter Marguerite his difficulty in painting: "I set up several times to do some, but in front of the canvas, I have no idea." How does a painter take a turn to follow his path? The exhibition at the Orangerie adopts a path full of curves and visual surprises to follow Matisse's turns in his painting. Matisse's painting is inscribed in Christian Zervos' Parisian magazine, Cahiers d'art, which marks out the exhibition along the walls, from the lithograph of Matisse on the cover of No. 1 in 1926, to the 1936 issue showing his drawings, with its quasi-abstract cover in cut paper. In 1930, Matisse turns his back on the "call to order" described by Cocteau, inflates his painting with a breath that will lead him after the war, in a "second life" after his operation, to a new great space in his cut papers - "the giant image" for Louis Aragon. What a pleasure, in our narrow period, that this exhibition where Matisse takes the wide!
