The exhibition

Surrealist women: objects and subjects

"Women tended to be allowed but not needed." The formula of Ithell Colquhoun, inventor of stillomania and member of the British Surrealists in the late 1930s, proves to be pithy. Hence the importance of this exhibition at the Montmartre Museum, which shatters a skewed perception of this movement by presenting the creations of some fifty women artists of different nationalities (Belgian, Mexican, British, American).

Surrealism in the feminine? is thus part of a movement of revaluation that is growing recently, notably with the presence of some of these artists in The Milk of Dreams at the Venice Biennale in 2022. Nevertheless, by giving it a title in the form of a question, the curators Alix Agret and Dominique Païni have taken the partial suggestion, even a rereading incarnate, non-exhaustive and especially passionate of the movement. The organization of the sections intersects with the recurring themes of surrealism: Metamorphosis, Chimeras, Interior Nights recall dreams, imagination and extraordinary phenomena.
