The Departmental Museum of Flanders located in Cassel in the North of France reopened its doors on October 23, 2010, after thirteen years of closure. Major restoration work has given a new lease of life to the Hôtel de la Noble Cour, which has housed the museum since 1964. The building, which dominates the square, is the seat of the former castellany of Cassel and has a courtyard. It is striking because of its facade, which combines Flemish architecture with elements of the Italian Renaissance vocabulary. The very heterogeneous collections, composed of about 6000 pieces, allow us to see the diversity of Flemish culture. The exhibition has therefore been designed not in a chronological or thematic manner, but in the form of diptychs (Submission and Anger, Between Earth and Sky, Measure and Excess, Ostentation and Derision) which encourage dialogue between artistic fields (painting, sculpture, engraving, objects...). This cultural approach also makes it possible to decompartmentalize the points of view and to integrate contemporary art into the permanent exhibition.
