The exhibition

Proust's Paris was first and foremost the Right Bank and the West of Paris, between the Plaine Monceau, the Place de la Concorde and the gardens of Auteuil. It was also the beginning of a vocation and the first writings, in the 1890s, at the Lycée Condorcet. Above all, it is the writing of La Recherche, in a room that the Carnavalet Museum has undertaken to reconstruct. Within a course exploring the role of the capital on the life and work of the writer, this room serves as an airlock for the passage from reality to fiction. For in the life of the writer - who described it as a "kaleidoscope of darkness" - it was certainly the scene of the alchemy that transformed his life into a novel. At the Carnavalet Museum, the experience conceived by the director Valérie Guillaume wants to combine aesthetic, documentary and sensory approaches, through a vast collection of paintings, sculptures, photographs, but also architectural models, manuscripts, archival documents and sound recordings of La Recherche. So many manifestations of a new approach to the theme that gives the museum its vocation: telling the story of Paris.
