The exhibition

"Throughout these days when the body dominates us, when the world is there like a block of cement [...]" These are some of the words from Michel Houellebecq's The Meaning of Combat, which inspired David Cohen to create a book of paintings. On the cover of each of these objects, echoing thirteen poems in their own lexicon, a ceramic representing a broken head has been sculpted in black stone. Then there are the words written in red, black or blue, sometimes like calligrams and other times even illegible. These words are in fact only "pretexts", a catalyst for exploring existential notions dear to the artist, which are found throughout his body of work: loss, trace and memory, death, pain and also - without doubt - resilience through art. Also a child psychiatrist, David Cohen presents this body of work at Galerie XXI, which he accompanies with monumental canvases and sculptures made from salvaged materials (clothes, a piece of wood found in the sea, a decomposing frame, mended burlap). Rustic means for great effects.
