The exhibition

The Clément Foundation, ambassador of contemporary Caribbean artists in Paris, inaugurates its brand new gallery. The 550 m2 of this gallery were designed by the architect Bernard Reichen, who renewed the traditional form of the glazed ceramic covering, a common material in Martinique. Two monumental windows border it, allowing visitors to see trees that are emblematic of Caribbean vegetation: the mombin and the cursed fig tree.
This space honors the Caribbean region in every way. It is designed to present the paintings and sculptures of its artistic scene, which the foundation has been collecting since 2005. It features the work of two major movements: the Negro-Caribbean school of the 1970s, whose assemblages by Serge Hélénon and totemic sculpture by Louis Laouchez affirm the composite nature of Creole culture, and the Fwomajé group, which in 1984 claimed an aesthetic nourished by its Amerindian background. If the great elders of the Caribbean are represented, the 800 works of the Pinacotheque do not neglect the young creation, largely put forward.
